Shoppers continue to feel the pinch as the costs of food and beverages rise. Recent data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) shows that the price of food and non-alcoholic drinks has increased by 4.5% compared with the previous year. This means that if a standard supermarket food shop was priced at £100 last year, it now costs £104.50, putting pressure on households at the checkout as necessities grow more costly.

One way in which shoppers can cut down on costs is by switching to supermarket non-branded items. Independent consumer brand Which? has rounded up the top-rated products by supermarket, so you can see what’s worth snapping up when you shop. When it comes to supermarket giant Aldi, there are three key items to look out for.

While only available in-store, Aldi’s selection of food and beverages is a great option if you’re looking to save money, whether you’re buying necessities or higher-end items.

After all, Aldi was named the “cheapest supermarket” by Which? for a shopping list of 89 items in January, where the groceries cost £164.74 on average.

Lidl was slightly more expensive than Aldi, on average, at £166.53 without a loyalty card, or £166.33 with one.

Tesco was the next cheapest for our list of groceries, costing £182.92. Waitrose was, once again, the most expensive supermarket at £221.53 – 34% more than Aldi.

Best Aldi food and drink

1. Aldi Specially Selected Large Beef Dripping Yorkshire Puddings

These superb-value Yorkshire puddings were not only the cheapest but also rated among the tastiest.

Aldi’s puddings finished top of the Which? taste test last November. Nearly two-thirds of tasters found the outside to have a good, crisp bite, and the inside to be fluffy and soft without being overly moist. The appearance was also well-liked, with many finding the colour just right.

2. Aldi Bramwells Beans in a Rich Tomato Sauce

Aldi’s own-brand offering was an excellent all-rounder, with close to three-quarters of taste testers finding the texture of both beans and sauce to be just right.

They looked appetising, and nearly two-thirds of our panel said that they tasted delicious. Most agreed that they were pleasantly sweet.

3. Aldi Barissimo Gold Roast Freeze Dried Coffee

This coffee from Aldi was enjoyed for its looks, aroma and flavour. Bitterness levels were approved by nearly two-thirds, and flavour by just shy of half of the tasters.

Aldi’s coffee is much cheaper than all the other high-scoring coffees, so it wins at being great value.
