Thom Yorke Reworks Unreleased ‘Gawpers’ as New Song ‘Dialing In’

Thom Yorke has reworked his unreleased track “Gawpers” for the new song “Dialing In,” which doubles as the opening theme for the upcoming Apple TV+ series Smoke.

Back in 2019, the Radiohead frontman staged a series of Philharmonie de Paris performances with French piano duo Katia and Marielle Labeque where he debuted a pair of new tracks, the classical composition “Don’t Fear the Light” and the moody “Gawpers.” In the half-decade that followed, neither song was officially released, but Yorke continued to tinker away at the latter, resulting in the freshly renamed “Dialing In.”

The song will serve as the opening theme song for Smoke, a series about a detective and an arson investigator in pursuit of a pair of serial arsonists. The show, based on true events first reported in the podcast Firebug, was written and developed by Gone Baby Gone and Mystic River novelist Dennis Lehane.

“Working with Thom Yorke was as much an honor for me as working with Clint Eastwood, Martin Scorsese or Richard Price,” Lehane said in a statement. “I’ve somehow been blessed with collaborating with living legends who were also formative influences on my own creative life. Thom is definitely that. In addition, he took a basic concept I gave him and delivered a song that perfectly embodies the show and absolutely crushes.”

Smoke premieres June 27 on the streaming service. “Dialing In” arrives just weeks after Yorke and Mark Pritchard dropped their collaborative album Tall Tales.
