The Witcher 3 is getting another expansion, more than a decade after launch

The fourth Witcher game may be a ways off, but fans won’t be without Geralt of Rivia for long. CD Projekt Red just announced Songs of the Past, the third expansion for The Witcher 3, which will be launching in 2027.

Aside from the title, there aren’t many details about the expansion just yet. It’s being co-developed by CDPR and fellow Polish studio Fool’s Theory. What’s most notable about Songs of the Past, though, is the timing: The Witcher 3 first launched in 2015, meaning the latest expansion is coming more than a decade after the game first premiered. The game’s first two expansions — Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine — both launched within a year of the base game. That said, things haven’t been totally quiet, as The Witcher 3 has seen some notable updates since then, including a big next-gen version in 2022, which improved the visuals and performance.

This kind of long-term support is rare, but it does tend to happen for majorly successful games, much like how Grand Theft Auto V was ported across three generations of consoles. The Witcher 3 has sold more than 60 million copies since launch, according to CDPR, making it one of the best-selling games of all time.

When it does launch, Songs of the Past will be available on the PS5, Xbox, and PC (which just got some updated system requirements), and the studio says we’ll hear more about the expansion in the summer. Given that Summer Game Fest kicks off next week, well, it might not be too long before we get some details.
