The Marias’ Maria Zardoya Plays Radiohead ‘Nude’ on Not For Radio Tour
The musician also premiered three new songs: “Living Room,” “Comet,” and “Ache”
María Zardoya played her debut show under her solo project Not For Radio with a few tricks up her sleeve. Taking the stage at Oakland’s Fox Theater, the musician performed cuts from her album Melt and premiered three unreleased songs. She had one special entry on the setlist that has been around for much longer than any of her other material: Radiohead’s “Nude.”
The 2007 recording appeared nine songs into the 15-track setlist. It was sandwiched between “Slip” and “Swan” from Melt.
Zardoya also appealed to fans who showed up to the first of her three nights at the venue hoping to hear music from the Marías, too. She performed “No One Noticed” from Submarine just before unveiling the new song “Ache,” but opted for the extended edition featuring additional lyrics that didn’t appear on the original cut.
“My intention with this project was to make music for the love of experimenting, far from home, fully in the moment, open to whatever stream of consciousness unfolded around us,” Zardoya wrote on Instagram when announcing Melt as her album as Not For Radio. “And that’s exactly what we did in the snowy woods, tucked away, as ice melted beneath our feet and as we melted into the songs. What grew from the melted ice is this album.”
In a four-star review of the album, Rolling Stone wrote, “All of it paints portraits of Lynchian terrain that’s dark, romantic, and ever-enthralling, with songs that feel unafraid to experiment and emote as they recall everyone from Radiohead to William Basinski to Julee Cruse. The trio let their imaginations drift, stretching out ideas of structure and frolicking with unexpected arrangements, often midsong.”
