The little-known John Wayne film fans have branded ‘one of the best comedies ever made | Films | Entertainment
An underrated John Wayne film has been hailed as “one of the best comedies ever made,” with fans praising the renowned actor’s performance. Donovan’s Reef (1963) tells the story of the beautiful French Polynesian island of Haleakalā, where everyone lives in harmony. Three World War II Navy veterans – Donovan (Wayne), Doc Dedham (Jack Warden) and Gilhooley (Lee Marvin) – converge on the island of Haleakalā and team up to deceive Dedham’s daughter (Elizabeth Allen).
She has just learned of her father’s existence and his inherited stock from the company of which she is chairman, and hopes to reclaim his shares. The film has garnered a host of positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, with many users applauding the performances of Wayne and Marvin.
One person wrote: “One of the best comedies ever made! John Wayne and Lee Marvin are brilliant!”
Another commented: “By far one of my favourite movies, Wayne and Marvin play off each other so well, and the humour combined with some emotional moments make this movie a must.”
A third added: “Donovan’s Reef is an excellent film. It is about dealing with moral issues such as racial bigotry, corporate greed, American belief of societal superiority and hypocrisy. John Wayne and Lee Marvin give amazing performances.
“The screenplay is well written. John Ford did a great job directing this movie. I enjoyed watching this motion picture because of the adventure and humour. Donovan’s Reef is a must-see.”
Despite these positive reviews, Donovan’s Reef was not a huge success financially or critically. The film grossed $6.6 million (£4.9 million) in North America, earning $3.3 million (£2.4 million) in US theatrical rentals.
The New York Times wrote that it was “sheer contrivance effected in hearty, fun-loving, truly infectious style”, while Variety called it an “effortless effort”.
