The Home Alone cast now – from tragic deaths to drug arrests | TV & Radio | Showbiz & TV
Since hitting cinemas in 1990, Home Alone has cemented itself as an essential festive viewing tradition, transforming Macaulay Culkin into an instant child sensation. Directed by Chris Columbus with a screenplay by John Hughes, the picture brims with slapstick comedy, seasonal warmth and memorable one-liners.
As the 1990s’ highest-earning film, Home Alone secured Macaulay a Golden Globe nod the following year for Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy. The beloved tale introduced audiences to eight-year-old Kevin McCallister (Macaulay), who was accidentally abandoned when his parents – portrayed by John Heard and Catherine O’Hara – jet off to Paris without him. Left to his own devices, he must protect his Chicago residence from a duo of burglars using an array of ingenious booby traps.
The original spawned a six-picture franchise, with the initial trilogy grossing over $866 million worldwide, according to The Numbers.
Over the years, cast members have gathered to mark significant anniversaries, whilst Macaulay has returned to the character for various promotions, including the “Home but Not Alone” festive advertisement in November 2025, which commemorated the film’s 35th anniversary. Here’s what they are all up to now.
Macaulay Culkin

Macaulay Culkin as Kevin McCallister
Child star Macaulay was just 10 years old when he landed the role of Kevin. He later continued his career, as he went on to star in the 1992 sequel Home Alone 2: Lost in New York before also having lead roles in Richie Rich (1994), The Pagemaster (1994), Party Monster (2003) and Saved! (2004).
In 2004, Macaulay was arrested for possession of marijuana and two controlled substances.
He was briefly jailed and then released on $4,000 bail. Later, in court, he received three one-year suspended prison sentences and was ordered to pay $540 in fees.

Actress Catherine O’Hara was already a big name in Hollywood before landing the role of Kevin’s mum, Kate, in Home Alone. She had worked on big titles such as Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice.
In 2020, she landed an Emmy for her hilarious portrayal of Moira Rose in Schitt’s Creek.
While she went on to continue to shine in other roles, she remained close with her on-screen son, Macaulay and the pair maintained a good friendship.
Tragically, the legendary actress died at age 71 on Jan. 30, 2026. Her death certificate revealed that she had a blood clot in her lungs, with rectal cancer being listed as the long-term cause of death.

Off-screen he had a pretty turbulent life. He married actress Margot Kidder in 1979, but the marriage lasted only six days.
In 1987, he had a son named Leo but then in 1991 he was arrested and charged with third-degree assault for slapping his child.
In 1997, he was found guilty of trespassing at Leo’s home but was acquitted of charges of trespassing at their son’s school.
He went on to have another son to Sharon Heard, named Max, but sadly he died when he was just 22.
Heard died in 2017 aged 72. He was found dead in a hotel room in Palo Alto, California.
His cause of death was noted as cardiac arrest due to atherosclerotic and hypertensive heart disease.
