This is the ‘best’ war movie on Netflix right now, according to Rotten Tomatoes and it has a 92% rating.

Midway, released in 2019, covers the first six months in the Pacific Theater during World World Two, including the attack on Pearl Harbour and the titular Battle of Midway.

The film’s synopsis reads: “In May 1942 the Imperial Japanese Navy launches an attack on the island of Midway in the Pacific Ocean. Securing it will provide a base for operations against Pearl Harbour and ultimately allow them to attack the US west coast. However, US Navy Intelligence has worked out their plan. Admiral Chester Nimitz sends two US Task Groups with three aircraft carriers to set a trap for the Japanese fleet. What follows is one of the most important battles in history.”

Midway was directed by Roland Emmerich and it stars Ed Skrein, Patrick Wilson, Luke Evans, Aaron Eckhart, Nick Jonas, Mandy Moore, Dennis Quaid, Tadanobu Asano, Darren Criss and Woody Harrelson.

The film surpassed box-office expectations but holds mixed reviews with Rotten Tomatoes critics awarding it only 42% against the audience score of 92%, it’s a stark difference.

The critics consensus reads: “Midway revisits a well-known story with modern special effects and a more balanced point of view, but its screenplay isn’t quite ready for battle.”

One reviewer commented: “Another example of why I always ignore “professional” critics reviews. The Tomato Meter on this is just wrong. This was a well done retelling of a classic story.”

A critic wrote: “The focus of a war film should be on the men and women who fight and for what they are fighting. Without that setup, Midway is just a spectacle of violence.”

Film critic, Wendy Ide of The Observer gave the film a score of 2 out of 5 stars, writing: “Every tired war movie cliche is unearthed in a film that brings nothing new but will no doubt please fans of men in uniform yelling at explosions.”

Midway is available to stream on Netflix.
