There’s a brand new horror on the block, and some are calling it a “masterpiece“. The picture has already received an impressive score of 93% on Rotten Tomatoes and shows no sign of slowing down. As well as this, the film has been granted the top spot on BBC Culture’s listing of cinema highlights of the year so far, describing the new horror as “unique”.

Weapons is a mystery horror film directed, written, produced, and co-scored by Zach Cregger. It stars Josh Brolin, Julia Garner, Alden Ehrenreich, Austin Abrams, Cary Christopher, Toby Huss, Benedict Wong and Amy Madigan. The film’s synopsis reads: “When all but one child from the same class mysteriously vanish on the same night at exactly the same time, a community is left questioning who or what is behind their disappearance.”

Weapons has been receiving much praise from critics and fans alike. It’s 93% rating on Rotten Tomatoes reflects that. The critics’ consensus states: “Zach Cregger spins an expertly crafted yarn of terrifying mystery and thrilling intrigue in Weapons, a sophomore triumph that solidifies his status as a master of horror.”

One critic said: “Weapons is an ambitious, well-crafted, and expansive horror experience that shows Zach Cregger is a filmmaking force to be reckoned with in cinema. Highly recommended.”

The audience consensus states: “Loaded with bold elements that make it not just a great horror film, but a noteworthy film overall, Weapons is ultimately an impressive, genre-bending experience that’s original, entertaining, and satisfying despite its faint air of ambiguity.”

An audience reviewer described the movie as a “masterpiece” and said: “From the very first frame, Weapons grips you with a taut, almost suffocating atmosphere that never lets go. This is a masterful piece of filmmaking that transcends the typical thriller genre, delving deep into the psychological ramifications of violence. The director, with a keen eye for detail, builds a world that feels both familiar and unnervingly alien.”

Another said: “This was a very unsettling film from beginning to end. Perfect watch in my opinion.”

Similarly, on IMDb, reviewers are hailing the thrilling movie, though it has a slightly lower rating of 7.5/10.

One reviewer said: “Exceeding all my expectations, Weapons is an incredibly powerful film where Zach Cregger masterfully blends tension and dark humour to a new level of sharpness.”

“What makes Weapons stand out is how confidently it holds your attention. From start to finish, it’s a film that refuses to let go, pulling you deeper into its unsettling premise. It’s refreshing to see such commitment to originality in mainstream horror, and the movie feels like a love letter to the genre’s willingness to take risks,” added another viewer.

Weapons is available to purchase on Apple TV and Amazon Prime.
