If you are looking for a heartwarming festive watch, you will not be disappointed by this film. Christmas movies are one of the best ways to get into the spirit of the season, but it can seem like there are only the same few to watch on rotation.

There is one older film that has topped a Rotten Tomatoes list as the number one “best” Christmas film ever. The Shop Around the Corner (1940) follows the story of two employees at a gift shop who can barely stand each other, without realising that they are falling in love through the post as each other’s anonymous pen pal.

One person who watched the film said on IMDb that it “oozes charm”.

Another fan of the film penned: “Sweet romantic drama/comedy about Stewart and Sullavan writing love letters to each other without either one knowing who the other is.

“Naturally, they work together and can’t stand each other. You can guess the rest.

“It’s beautifully acted by the entire cast (especially Sullavan, Stewart and Frank Morgan), has a witty, intelligent script and looks absolutely stunning.

“It takes place in Budapest and was shot in Hollywood, but I found myself believing I was seeing Budapest! Everything looks so perfect and dream-like. A one-of-a-kind film. Don’t miss it!”

If you have already seen Home Alone and The Grinch plenty of times, this could be the perfect way to watch something different this year.

The Shop Around the Corner has inspired numerous subsequent works. The film is said to have inspired the 1990s hit film You’ve Got Mail, says Collider.

Over the decades, the film has captured the hearts of audiences and even all these years later, it is still a popular choice at Christmas.
