An award-winning British drama is currently available to watch on Netflix, but leaving the streaming platform soon, on 4 July. The film follows a successful series, set on a fictional estate in North Yorkshire, England.

Downton Abbey, the motion picture, follows the popular drama series. While the series follows the lives of the aristocratic Crawley family and their servants, the first film features a royal visit from King George V and Queen Mary to the Crawley family’s stately home. The film is the first of three in the franchise.

The historical drama film features stars like Hugh Bonneville, Jim Carter and Maggie Smith. The film also received awards for its design, winning a Hollywood Film Award for Costume Designer of the Year and the Hollywood Makeup Artist and Hair Stylist Guild Award for Best Period and/or Character Hair Styling for a Feature-Length Motion Picture.

The film received generally positive reviews from critics, grossing $194.7 million (approximately £146.4 million) worldwide and winning praise for its blend of scandal, romance and intrigue.

Original cast members like Elizabeth McGovern, Michelle Dockery and Laura Carmichael also made a return from the series to the film.

The 2019 film also scored successfully on critics’ platforms, scoring 85 per cent on Rotten Tomatoes and 7.4 stars out of 10 on IMDb.

One Rotten Tomatoes reviewer wrote: “Everything from the acting to the wardrobe, the music and the cinematography, not to mention the sets and decor, this is a world you get swept up in, enchanted by every moment.”

Another fan praised Michelle Dockery’s performance in particular, writing: “Michelle Dockery steps back into Lady Mary’s perfectly polished shoes with effortless authority. She’s still sharp as ever—confident, strategic, with a steel backbone—but now there’s a grace to her leadership.

“Dockery captures that quiet transformation beautifully, reminding us why Mary remains one of the most compelling characters in the franchise.”

Fans should be made aware that, while the Downton Abbey series is currently available to stream for free on ITVX, the film is not available to watch on the platform. Nevertheless, those hoping to watch it can find it on Netflix until the start of next month.
