Blot, don’t rub

Once the stain has been made you have to act quickly to ensure the chocolate doesn’t set into the fabric.

Jason said: “Begin by blotting the stain with a clean cloth or paper towel to remove as much excess chocolate as possible. Avoid rubbing the stain, as this can spread it further and embed it deeper into the fibres.”

Gently scrub with a soft brush or sponge

Next, Jason suggests mixing a small amount of mild detergent with water and gently scrubbing the affected area using a soft-bristled brush or sponge.

He recommends: “Be careful not to oversaturate the fabric, as this can lead to water stains or damage to the upholstery.”

Try a vinegar solution

Sometimes the stain does persist so you might want to use a vinegar solution to help break it down.

Jason shared: “Mix equal parts white vinegar and water, then dab the solution onto the stain with a cloth. Allow it to sit for a few minutes before blotting it up with a clean, damp cloth.”

Stain remover

If that doesn’t work and for particularly stubborn stains, consider using a commercial stain remover that is designed for upholstery.

Just make sure to always test the product on a small area first to ensure it won’t cause any damage to the fabric.

Seek professional cleaning help

Finally, sometimes you need to call for extra help. A professional cleaner will have the expertise and the equipment to effectively remove even the toughest chocolate stains without causing harm to your sofa.
