Surprising 59p solution to steer clear of stinky bin in hot weather
As the mercury rises, so does the stench in our kitchens, with higher temperatures accelerating the rotting process of household waste and leaving a rather unpleasant aroma of decomposing foodstuffs. But fear not, for a cleaning guru has revealed a thrifty hack to banish those foul smells using an everyday item that might just be lurking in your cupboard, all for the modest sum of 59p.
“There’s nothing worse than when you can smell the bin as soon as you walk into your kitchen,” Laura Marsden, a cleaning expert at Marigold, said. “For a deep clean that will rid your bin of odours, make a paste with some bicarbonate of soda and warm water, and wipe down the insides of your bin using a durable microfibre cloth, such as the Marigold Let It Shine On & On! Microfibre cloth.
“Bicarbonate of soda is a natural deodoriser and can be bought from the supermarket for as little as 59p.”
The humble bicarbonate of soda has long been lauded for its ability to neutralise nasty niffs. Tim Alcock at LeaseCar.uk also recommends mixing the ingredient with one part white vinegar and one part water to rid of dog smells in your car.
Some even spritz this versatile mixture onto furniture, much like a homemade Febreze. That said, Marsden’s method simply pairs the bicarbonate of soda with water.
She continued: “Wipe off the solution with a damp microfibre cloth and, crucially let the bin dry before you add a bag – this avoids trapping excess moisture in between the bin and the liner, which could become a breeding ground for bacteria.
“An extra tip is to add a sprinkle of bicarbonate of soda to the bottom of your bin – it really helps eliminate odours… You can also add a few drops of essential oil, such as lavender oil, to the bottom of your bin liner, to keep it smelling lovely.”
Bicarbonate of soda is currently available at plenty of UK supermarkets, including Sainsbury’s for 59p and Lidl for 65p.
