Food shopping can be fun, but expensive all at once.

But in recent decades, supermarkets have become experts in the subtle art of product placement, influencing shoppers’ purchasing choices without them even realising it.

A TikTok influencer, known as @sabrisuby, exposed ‘six supermarket traps’ that he claims encourage consumers to spend more money.

Garnering a substantial online following, he stated: “Six hacks supermarkets use to make you buy more.” He continued: “Here are the sickening secrets supermarkets are hiding from you.

“Ever wondered why fruit and veggies greet you at the entrance? It’s a psychological hack that triggers health-halo effect tricking you into filling your cart.”

He continued to unveil how everyday essentials like milk and eggs are craftily positioned at the rear of the store, compelling customers to navigate a gauntlet of sinful snacks, likely picking up a few along the way.

Additionally, he pointed out the stealthy expansion of shopping carts intended to encourage greater purchases, the strategic shelving of expensive items at eye-level, and cheaper items hidden on the lower shelves.

Ending on a climactic note, he revealed: “Checkout is the ultimate trap, they prey on your decision fatigue and force you to look at chocolate bars, insane right?”

The TikTok post amassed thousands of views and sparked a flurry of commentary among the platform’s users.

One user exclaimed: “Ah that’s how they do it…” while another chimed in with: “Interesting.” A third remarked: “Yep be hacking the system for years.”

However, not everyone was swayed by his claims. One critic scoffed: “We learnt this in 1993.”

And another dismissed: “This is not new information and it’s not some big secret. Not everything is a conspiracy.”
