The “Total Eclipse of the Heart” singer is “stable” after undergoing emergency surgery last week, her reps said in a new update

Bonnie Tyler remains “seriously ill but stable” at a hospital in Faro, Portugal, after undergoing emergency intestinal surgery last week.

Tyler’s reps shared an update on the “Total Eclipse of the Heart” singer’s website on Tuesday, May 12. They noted that, despite the severity of the medical emergency, Tyler’s doctors “are still positive that she will make a full recovery.”

The note also highlighted Tyler’s family’s disappointment with “the many lurid and untrue rumors now circulating in the media.” They specifically pushed back against a man named Liberto Mealha, who has presented himself as a close friend in media interviews. The family “would like to make it clear that Liberto Mealha does not represent them in any way whatsoever and is not in contact with them regarding Bonnie,” the note stated.

“When there is any further news of Bonnie’s condition then we will issue another statement, but ask that the media cease to speculate or publish wild rumors, which simply serve to upset her family, friends, and many fans, and ask again for privacy and decency at this difficult time,” the statement concluded.

Tyler’s team revealed her hospitalization and emergency surgery last Wednesday, May 6. At the time, they said the surgery “went well” and that the singer was “recuperating.” Two days later, however, they shared an update noting that Tyler had been “put into an induced coma by her doctors to aid her recovery.” (The update shared today did not say whether or not Tyler was still in the coma.)

Tyler is scheduled to launch a European tour later this month commemorating the 50th anniversary of her recording career. (Her debut single, “My! My! Honeycomb” was released in 1976.) While a planned May 22 appearance at a festival in Malta has been canceled, Tyler’s remaining tour dates are currently still on the books. The run is set to start May 30 in Wiesmoor, Germany.
