Silvana Estrada won a dedicated following — and a Latin Grammy for Best New Artist — with her gorgeous 2022 debut album Marchita. She’s kept busy releasing songs and an EP since then and now, she’s back with her first single of 2025: “Como Un Pájaro,” a stunning contemplation of what it feels like to heal after the worst kind of heartbreak.

The song centers Estrada’s voice over guitar as she sings about staying up late at night, trying to move on from someone: “Leave me alone if I’m crying until dawn/ Given that I love you as much as I do/You tell me what I’m supposed to do/And while the whole world sleeps/I’m getting over you,” she sings in Spanish. The song is more lush than some of the stripped-back arrangements from Marchita, with strings arranged by Roberto Verastegui and performed by the FAME’S Skopje Studio Orchestra in Macedonia. The song also sees Estrada self-producing for the first time.

She says “Como Un Pájaro” came to her during a specific period of loneliness. “I was alone at home, trying to get over a heartbreak, and at night I suffered from terrible insomnia,” Estrada said in a statement. “I was just starting to play the guitar, so I would practice to see if sleep would eventually come and allow me to rest. Out of that silence and solitude — feeling like the only person awake in a sleeping city — this song was born.”

“When I listen to it, I can still feel the loneliness that surrounded me at that time,” she added. “But I also feel grateful for the moments when I’ve truly been able to be with myself. I hope that beyond being a breakup song, it can serve as a small offering to solitude and silence, to the contemplation of one’s own experience.”

The song has already become popular among fans; Estrada played it a few times and found the audience would ask for it at concerts. “People started requesting it just moments after I began playing,” she says. “They would shout, ‘Play ‘las luces!’ because the first verse begins, ‘se apagaron ya las luces, ahora duerme la ciudad.’ That connection with the audience became a powerful reminder of the song’s resonance.”

2025 is shaping up to be a busy year for the singer. She performed with Laufey in Mexico City this week, and earlier this month, she curated a stage at Pitchfork Music Festival CDMX.
