Shakira Breaks Mexico City Zócalo Attendance Record With Free Concert
“There’s definitely no better reunion than that of a little she-wolf with her Mexican pack here today at the Zócalo. Forever, we are one,” the musician told the audience
A record-breaking 400,000 people attended the free concert Shakira hosted at the Zócalo in Mexico City. As the concluding stop in the country on her Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran tour, the musician treated the show as something of a homecoming. “Today, I feel a mix of excitement, nostalgia, and gratitude. Today is our last day here in Mexico, my home,” Shakira told the audience. “There’s definitely no better reunion than that of a little she-wolf with her Mexican pack here today at the Zócalo. Forever, we are one.”
The concert marked the largest gathering of attendees at the Zócalo, according to the Mexico City Tourism Secretariat. “A new attendance record envelops the capital Zócalo, the most special stage in Mexico City,” the department shared on social media. “Four hundred thousand hearts beat, moved and sang in unison at the magnificent concert of Shakira in the Historic Center of the capital. Long live the greatness of our city and its stages to enjoy different artistic expressions!”
Shakira kicked off her stretch of shows in Mexico in Tuxtla Gutiérrez on Feb. 21. The set was followed by an appearance in Mérida on Feb. 24 and at Mexico City’s GNP Seguros Stadium on Feb. 27. The Zócalo concert brings the run to an end as she prepares to head to Asia for the final leg of the tour. “This is a love and friendship story I have with Mexico that can’t be compared to anything,” Shakira said on stage. “Thank you for all the excitement, all the joy you’ve made me feel.”
Shakira last performed at the Zólaco nearly two decades ago. “¡México lindo! Remember 2007 when I sang for you at the Zócalo? Today, I want to tell you that this experience will happen again,” Shakira wrote on social media when announcing the free concert. “You have given me so, so much, and I hope I can give back a little bit of that love you’ve given me.”
