Sale of Birmingham-Southern campus falls through
A deal for Miles College to purchase the closed campus of Birmingham-Southern College appears to be off the table after the purchase agreement expired earlier this week, Al.com reported.
BSC officially closed at the end of May after years of financial struggles.
Miles College, a nearby historically Black institution, announced in September that it planned to purchase the 192-acre site. However, the deal was not completed by the initial Oct. 25 deadline, or by an extended deadline that passed last week. BSC reportedly declined to extend the deadline another month and will now seek another buyer for the campus, local media reported.
But Miles officials still seem interested in making the deal; they told Al.com that the college would “continue to explore every avenue to secure this opportunity in the future.”
Goddard College, a small institution in Vermont that also closed earlier this year, suffered a similar setback this fall when the sale of its campus fell through. However, the board was able to reach an agreement with another buyer, a real estate developer, shortly after the initial setback.
