Warning – this article contains major spoilers for Regretting You

Regretting You is the latest big screen adaptation based on the works of Colleen Hoover with an all-star cast bringing the romance to life.

Based on the 2019 novel of the same name, it’s the second cinematic release inspired by the bestselling author following last year’s controversial drama It Ends With Us.

Starring Allison Williams and McKenna Grace as mother and daughter Morgan and Clara Grant, this heartbreaking drama is guaranteed to have audiences reaching for the tissues.

But what’s Hoover’s original novel all about, including that dramatic ending? Let’s take a look before fans flock to the new film.

What happens in Regretting You?

Hoover’s novel follows two generations of romance as both Morgan and Clara find love.

35-year-old Morgan had Clara when she was 17 and their already fraught relationship is put to the test when both Clara’s father, Chris (played in the film by Scott Eastwood), and Morgan’s sister, Jenny (Willa Fitzgerald) are killed in a car accident.

This tragedy also reveals that Chris and Jenny were having an affair when Morgan discovers their secret correspondence, leaving her feeling even more isolated as she raises her daughter alone during her difficult teenage years.

Meanwhile, Clara is experiencing her first love after falling for local bad boy, Miller (Mason Thames), who finds himself in Morgan’s bad books when he encourages Clara to let loose by buying her weed.

Despite Morgan’s suspicions, Miller demonstrates he truly cares for her daughter when he attends the funeral service for Clara’s father and he’s eventually accepted by Morgan. The funeral is also attended by another key player, Jenny’s husband Jonah (Dave Franco).

One of the most pivotal moments in the book occurs in a theatre, with Clara using a local performing arts centre as a safe haven away from her family drama.

In the scene, Clara emotionally confesses she’s no better than her cheating father as she also made advances on Miller despite knowing he already had a girlfriend.

Morgan assures her that we’re not our parents and it’s possible to learn from their mistakes. She also admits to feeling attracted to Jonah before but explains it’s all about not giving into temptation.

At the end of Regretting You, Morgan accepts Clara’s romance with Miller and decides to start a relationship with Jonah.

Based on the trailers, it seems that the film adaptation of Regretting You, directed by Josh Boone, sticks closely to the plot of the book, though there’s still a chance there could be some surprises for fans.

A synopsis for the movie reads: “Morgan Grant and her daughter Clara explore what’s left behind after a devastating accident reveals a shocking betrayal and forces them to confront family secrets, redefine love, and rediscover each other.”

Regretting You is in UK cinemas now.
