The 90s might seem like just a blink away – but the reality is that it’s been quite a stretch since then, and the technological leaps we’ve made are nothing short of astonishing.

It’s hard for many to fathom just how much has changed in the last 35 years, with today’s popular gadgets being the stuff of dreams back then.

This sense of nostalgia and curiosity sparked a lively discussion on the ‘Ask Reddit‘ forum, where one user posed an intriguing scenario: “You wake up and it’s the 1990s. No WiFi, no smartphones. What’s the first thing you do?”

While the question is making people reminisce fondly, it’s sparked an exisetntial crisis for others. They say looking back at how much has changed has made them re-think their lives as they are today.

One person exclaimed: “Say ‘Oh thank god,’ and then go back to sleep”. Echoing this sentiment, another shared: “Same, but also, get on my BMX bike and ride to the swimming pool with my friends.”

Another appreciated the potential peace, saying: “Be thankful that no one will be able to get hold of me; they have to leave a voice message and wait.”

Another commenter highlighted the quirks of communication back then: “They’ll get a call back IF I rewind the tiny little tape and listen to the message. If I have to write their number down, I’m simply not calling them back.”

Others quipped that it sounded like a movie plot, writing: “And since this is clearly a movie, you will do this by running out into the street and loudly screaming at the first person you see, ‘WHAT YEAR IS IT?!?!?!?’!”.

“No. You find the nearest guy with a newspaper, steal it from him, and frantically scan the page for a date,” a cinema enthusiast suggested.

Some were savvy about their hypothetical time travel, stating they’d “find the year and start buying Apple stock and houses,” knowing it would make them wealthy in the future.

Others used the conversation to reflect on their own lives, sharing: “I was in my 20s in the 90s. I was young, in my prime, and getting ready to travel the world.

“I had no ties that I didn’t want. I was idealistic and invincible. Now I’m an old man and a slave to my responsibilities. I’m tired now, but I lived once. I lived once.”
