The UK is home to many famous filming locations. There are beaches, castles and market towns across the country that have appeared in some of the biggest films ever made. One of those places is also a pretty little village in West Yorkshire.

At first glance, it looks like a typical British village with cobbled streets, stone buildings and independent shops. But it is also famous for appearing in what many people consider to be the greatest film ever made. The movie still holds a perfect 100% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes, more than 50 years after it first came out.

If you read reviews online, they do not hold back in their praise.

One person wrote on Rotten Tomatoes: “Best film ever made. Period. Nothing comes close.”

Another added: “British filmmaking at its finest. Perfect masterpiece that is timeless.”

The film they’re talking about is The Railway Children, which was filmed in and around Haworth and the nearby Worth Valley.

Released in 1970, the drama was based on E. Nesbit’s 1906 novel of the same name and starred Jenny Agutter, Sally Thomsett, Gary Warren, Dinah Sheridan and Bernard Cribbins.

The film tells the story of three children who move from London to the Yorkshire countryside after their family circumstances suddenly change.

It was a huge success when it was released and remains one of the most loved British films ever made.

Many of the locations used during filming can still be visited today. The best known is Oakworth Station.

The station remains largely unchanged and is still part of the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway, which runs heritage steam trains through the valley.

Visitors can also walk around Haworth’s cobbled Main Street, which appeared in the film, along with Church Lane and several nearby railway bridges and tunnels.

The area was chosen by director Lionel Jeffries because it had changed very little over the years and still looked like an Edwardian Yorkshire village.

One reason the film remains so popular is that many of the locations still look much the same today.

The Keighley and Worth Valley Railway is often referred to as “The Railway Children Line” and continues to attract visitors from around the world.

However, Haworth offers much more than just its film connection. The village is perhaps best known for its links to the Brontë sisters.

Charlotte, Emily and Anne Brontë lived in Haworth and wrote some of their most famous novels while living there.

Today, visitors can visit the Brontë Parsonage Museum, which contains personal belongings, manuscripts and other items connected to the family.

The village is also packed with independent shops, pubs, cafés and tea rooms.

On top of that, those who enjoy walking can head onto the Yorkshire moors, where there are several popular routes, including walks to Brontë Waterfall and Top Withens, which is widely believed to have inspired Wuthering Heights.
