Popular shampoo and conditioner recalled over serious chemical risk

A popular set of shampoo and conditioners has been recalled after a serious chemical risk was discovered. The Office for Product Safety and Standards has warned customers of the dangers and the products have now been pulled from sale.

The Pilgrim Anti-Dandruff Shampoo and Conditioner Set has been removed from Amazon after the banned ingredient was found. It contains Zinc Pyrithione, which is prohibited for use in cosmetic products. The products affected have the code: HS5130 Jul 2025 395.00 1.98.

Amazon’s codes are B0D5DBM7G7 for the shampoo and B0D5D9BF3Q for the conditioner. Pilgrim’s shampoo and conditioners sell on the online marketplace for between £12 and £20.

The OPSS warned: “The product presents a serious chemical risk as the ingredients list indicates it contains Zinc Pyrithione, which is prohibited for use in cosmetic products.

“It also includes the following undeclared allergens: hydroxycitronellal, hexyl cinnamal, and limonene. This could lead to consumers with sensitivities using these products and having an allergic reaction.”

They added: “The product does not meet the requirements of the Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009 on Cosmetic Products.” In response to the findings, the products have been removed from Amazon and rejected at the UK border.

Earlier this month,  two designer perfumes were recalled due to them containing a banned ingredient. Hello by Lionel Richie and Hot by United Colours of Benetton Fragrances sold by Savers Health and Beauty were both recalled.

The Office for Product Safety Standards warned they both contain butylphenyl methylpropional (BMHCA), which is prohibited from use in cosmetic products. The recall was for the fragrances that were sold at Savers Health and Beauty. 

The OPSS warned: “The products present a serious chemical risk as they contain butylphenyl methylpropional (BMHCA/lilial), which is prohibited in cosmetic products.

“BMHCA may harm the reproductive system, may harm the health of the unborn child, and may cause skin sensitisation. The products do not meet the requirements of Regulation (EC) 1223/2009.” Customers have been urged to return the products to Savers, where they will be issued a full refund.
