Pittsburgh Technical College to Close

Pittsburgh Technical College is closing in August, the Board of Trustees announced Monday. A statement cited declining enrollment, market pressures and inflation stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic and “changing views of higher education.”

“We have worked tirelessly to identify a viable path forward and exhausted all options to try to avoid this outcome,” board members said in the statement.

The move follows a challenging year for the small private college. Last year, board members resigned en masse after employees voted no confidence in President Alicia Harvey-Smith. In March, PTC’s accreditor, the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, put the college on probation. Then, last week, Middle States announced the college was “in danger of imminent closure.”

Officials said PTC has entered into teach-out agreements with several colleges and vowed to support current students in making new plans before the campus shuts down on August 9.
