Singer had kept low profile since infamous onstage incident that led to Jane’s Addiction breakup

Jane’s Addiction singer Perry Farrell has returned to music for the first time since his now-former band’s infamous blow-up, with Farrell collaborating on a new song with techno musician Carl Cox.

In September 2024, Jane’s Addiction came to an abrupt and explosive end during a Boston concert when Farrell punched guitarist Dave Navarro onstage, an incident that resulted in the reunion tour’s immediate cancellation, the band breaking up, and now a pair of lawsuits.

While Farrell’s former Jane’s Addiction band mates rebounded to new music together sans the singer, Farrell himself has kept a low profile over the past year, until the release Friday of Cox’s new song “Joya.”

“When the opportunity came to work with Perry, I jumped at it and sent him the idea for Joya!” Cox said in a statement posted on the track’s Bandcamp. “It just came together so beautifully, and I have been proud to play it as the closer for all of my sets in the last year. People respond to it with such joy, and that is what I was aiming for all along! Joya!”

Farrell added, “It means the world to me that we’re making people so happy with our music.. Joyaaaaaah!”

In the immediate fallout of Jane’s Addiction’s sudden demise, Perry’s wife Etty Liu said she and her husband would be “taking a bit of time to ourselves, to reflect and to heal. Perry already has appointments with an otolaryngologist and a neurologist.” Perry has not personally posted on social media since the Jane’s Addiction incident last year.

However, it appears the singer is making moves to rejoin the music world: In addition to “Joya,” Farrell is among the guests booked to join guitarist Robby Krieger at an all-star concert celebrating the Doors’ 60th anniversary later this month.
