‘Perfect’ thriller that’s the ‘greatest masterpiece of the decade’ is on Amazon Prime | Films | Entertainment
A “masterpiece” thriller is hailed by fans for its gripping story and “amazingly twisted ending”. Parasite (2019) is South Korean black comedy thriller that focuses on a poor family who con their way into working in the home of the Parks, a wealthy Soeul family.
The film was directed by celebrated Korean filmmaker Bong Joon Ho (The Host, Snowpiercer, Okja) who also co-wrote the screenplay, and stars Song Kang-ho, Lee Sun-kyun, Cho Yeo-jeong, Choi Woo-shik, Park So-dam, Jang Hye-jin, Park Myung-hoon, and Lee Jung-eun.
Parasite was quickly hailed as a modern classic, with audiences stunned by its combination of searing critique of class divides in South Korea, brutal violence, and surreal humour.
It picked up four Oscars, including Best Picture (the first non-English language film to win the gong), Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best International Feature Film.
Collider put the film top in a ranking of the Greatest Movie Masterpieces of the Last 10 Years. William Smith, a writer for the site, said Parasite “straddles multiple genres while maintaining a consistent tone throughout, a skill that seems to be shared by many of the more genre-minded filmmakers coming out of South Korea but not by as many of their American contemporaries”
He added that Bong is “one of the most exciting filmmakers currently working, and this is his magnum opus”.
Fans took to Rotten Tomatoes to shower the film with praise, with one calling it a “perfect film” and another saying it’s “definitely” Bong’s “masterpiece”.
“And everyone you talk to loves this movie. I love this movie. Meant to be watched again and again.”
A third added: “I really, really loved Parasite, and it’s definitely up there in my top 5. I mean, what more do you want from a movie?
“Amazing soundtrack, amazingly creative and sound plot that gripped me all the way to the end, amazing acting from an amazing cast and an amazingly twisted ending.
“The reason why this review is so short is that I literally have nothing else to say about it. Not gonna spoil anything if you haven’t seen it, so go watch Parasite.”
A fourth wrote: “This movie was unexpectedly a masterpiece and also smartly funny and really well executed. I can’t really say anything cause this movie is just straight up a masterpiece and a must-watch experience.
“I recommend you this art, it will blow your mind.”
The film has an exemplary 99% Tomatometer score, reflecting the percentage of approved critics who have given it a positive review.
It’s also got a 90% score among general audiences, in line with the rapturous response the film got upon its release and since.
The film is a pretty brutal watch at times, with a 15 certificate for its strong bloody violence, language, sex, and sex references – so may not be for everyone.
Parasite is available to rent or buy on various platforms, including YouTube, Sky Store, Curzon, Apple TV, and Curzon. You can also watch it on BFI player or on Amazon Prime with a BFI or Curzon subscription.
