Oscar-winning British rom-com classic is on BBC Two this weekend | Films | Entertainment

Back in 1998, Gwyneth Paltrow and Joseph Fiennes starred in the fictional portrayal of Viola de Lesseps’ love affair with William Shakespeare during the writing of Romeo and Juliet. Written by Marc Norman and Tom Stoppard, this jolly British rom-com was both critically acclaimed and a box-office hit. Nominated for 13 Oscars, Shakespeare in Love won seven, famously beating Saving Private Ryan. Of course, as the producer, the now-disgraced Harvey Weinstein picked up his Oscar for Best Picture.

Meanwhile, Paltrow took home Best Actress and Judi Dench won Best Supporting Actress for her cameo as Queen Elizabeth I.

Shakespeare in Love in on BBC Two this Sunday evening at 10pm and will be streaming on BBC iPlayer afterwards for a limited time.
