Oscar-nominated Pope Francis film biopic is streaming now | Films | Entertainment
This morning, the Vatican announced that Pope Francis has died after 12 years as the Head of the Roman Catholic Church.
The late Jorge Mario Bergoglio became pontiff after Pope Benedict XVI resigned in 2013, the first to do so voluntarily since 1294.
The stark contrast between the traditional conservative Benedict and the humble progressive Francis was explored in a 2019 play by Anthony McCarten, which in turn became a movie penned by the same writer called The Two Popes.
The critically acclaimed film stars Sir Anthony Hopkins as Pope Benedict XVI opposite Jonathan Pryce as Cardinal Bergoglio in uncanny Oscar-nominated roles.
Mainly set in the aftermath of the Vatican leaks scandal, The Two Popes follows Benedict trying to convince Bergoglio to reconsider his archbishop resignation while secretly intending to abdicate himself.
The film also features flashbacks to Bergoglio’s time as a young Jesuit priest in his native Argentina during the military dictatorship.
The Two Popes is exclusively streaming in 4K on Netflix.
