One of the best Oscar-winning war epics ever made is on TV this weekend | Films | Entertainment
Glory follows the 54th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment, one of the Union Army’s first African American units during the 19th century conflict. Matthew Broderick stars as the real life Colonel Robert Gould Shaw with Denzel Washington, Cary Elwes and Morgan Freeman as fictional troops under his command.
Edward Zwick’s historical war epic follows the 54th from its formation through to their heroic efforts at the Second Battle of Fort Wagner in 1863. Of its five Oscars nominations, the film took home three Academy Awards including Best Actor in a Supporting Role for Washington. This would be his first of two Acting Oscars to date, with Best Actor for Training Day in 2001 to follow.
Glory is on Channel 4 at 1:20am this Monday morning and if you’re watching England v Mexico, it will be on the Channel 4 streaming app afterwards for a limited time.
