A man has highlighted a familiar detail that virtually every Brit who’s embarked on a countryside ramble will recognise. The UK boasts numerous breathtaking landscapes, with undulating hills, vast woodlands and forests, peaceful lakes, and so much more.

Those residing in rural areas, or visitors seeking a well-deserved staycation or retreat, frequently find themselves slipping on hiking shoes or wellington boots to venture out and discover the benefits of nature. One aspect that soon becomes apparent is the extensive variety of gates walkers must navigate.

From hinged gates to kissing gates, there’s an abundance of seemingly complex or peculiar openings that regularly appear on numerous country strolls. A man called Danny recorded a montage of gates while out walking and posted the footage to TikTok.

In the video, filmed from Danny’s perspective, there are chain link gates, field gates and more, with many viewers particularly charmed by the kissing gate.

This represents a style of entrance gate which employs a pivoting, self-closing system that allows people to pass through while preventing wild animals from following.

It derives its name from how the gate is said to “kiss” the frame when closing. Many people observe the custom of couples sharing a kiss while passing through the gate.

They’re extremely prevalent in countryside locations, and are built from timber and steel in various sizes.

In the description alongside the footage, Danny simply wrote: “Kissing gate nation”.

TikTok users rushed to the comments section to share their thoughts.

One person said: “Never seen the first one”.

Another commented: “Yeah that first one is new to me too”.

A third user shared: “My favourite is the kissing gate ones”, to which, a fourth responded: “I thought my parents made that up”.

Another user noted: “I never know if I’m actually allowed in or if I’m casually trespassing”.

Someone else said: “Me when I’m trying to ride my bike and I reach a kissing gate or GOD FORBID ONE OF THE METAL CIRCLE GATES”.

And another added: “The multiple times I fell over doing that of the Duke of Edinburgh”.

One person shared: “Makes me feel whimsical”.

While another stated: “It makes it adventurous” and another lamented: “Just to get Sainsbury’s”.

Someone else revealed: “On DofE [Duke of Edinburgh’s Award], we came to a kissing gate so we all went one by one and blew kisses to each other as we went through”.

While another warned: “Those wooden steps are a death sentence if it’s just rained, they turn into mini ice rinks”.

And another observed: “Literally average walk from village to village”.

One person became nostalgic and shared: “As a child these things were the peak of every walk I went on. Big up the kissing gates”.

And another agreed: “Always leads to a nice spot”.
