One Rotten Tomatoes reviewer hailed it as the “best cringe comedy in years”, another slammed the production as a “stinking piece of hot garbage”.

The two-hour-and-27-minute feature unfolds across three distinct chapters. Initially, viewers meet the beautiful young couple, Yaya (Charlbi Dean) and Carl (Harris Dickinson), who are facing financial difficulties that is putting a strain on their relationship.

Their circumstances change dramatically when Yaya’s social media influence secures them an invitation aboard a luxury yacht, with Carl joining as her companion – propelling the narrative into its second segment.

Aboard the opulent cruise ship, the ultra-wealthy elite have their every desire fulfilled – regardless of how extravagant – as crew members are instructed to “never say no to the guests”.

One Rotten Tomatoes viewer observed: “This movie goes through the absurd to criticise the flaws of our capitalist society.” Adding: “First we explore the couple dynamics, then the economic dynamics, [and] finally the power dynamics shift.”

Following a grotesque dining sequence where guests succumb to violent seasickness in the midst of a storm, a shipwreck ensues, and the third act unfolds as the surviving passengers populate a seemingly uninhabited island.

Also stranded is the cruise ship’s former toilet cleaner, Abigail, who just so happens to be the only one who can start a fire and catch fish.

Stripped of their wealth, the ultra-wealthy must now comply with rules dictated by Abigail – who has become intoxicated by her newfound authority.

One viewer observed on Rotten Tomatoes: “The last act was by far the most interesting.” Another remarked: “Seems like the director didn’t know how to end it.”

Another critic stated bluntly: “There are many problems with Triangle of Sadness, but one of the biggest is that the different parts of the movie does not feel connected. It is also changing tone quite a bit between parts.”

However, a different viewer praised the film as “absolutely insane – in the best way possible” explaining: “It starts off as one thing and then completely flips into something else.” They continued: “It’s hilarious, disturbing, and so sharp in the way it talks about power, money, and human nature.”
