An action movie starring Arnold Schwarzenegger was originally written by author Stephen King.

The Running Man was released back in 1987 and is loosely based on the 1982 novel featuring the same name by Stephen.

He released the book under the pseudonym Richard Bachman, meaning many fans were unaware that it was the iconic author’s work.

The movie enjoyed immense success at the box office upon its release, but did attract mixed reviews from film critics at the time.

The star-studded cast of The Running Man includes Schwarzenegger, María Conchita Alonso, Yaphet Kotto, Jesse Ventura and Erland Van Lidth.

A second edition of The Running Man is due to be released later this year, after director Edgar Wright expressed his desire to create his own version of the hit movie back in 2017.

The dystopian action thriller is both produced and directed by Edgar. He and Michael Bacall co-wrote the screenplay, which is based on King’s 1982 novel.

This second adaption of the book will star the likes of Glen Powell, Katy O’Brian, Daniel Ezra, Karl Glusman, Josh Brolin, Lee Pace, Michael Cera, Emilia Jones, Sean Hayes and David Zayas.

The Running Man tells the story of a man, Ben Richards, who joins a game show which sees contestants pursued by ‘hunters’ who have been hired to kill them. They are able to travel anywhere in the world but are continuously hunted.

The 2025 film is said to be a fresh retelling of the much-loved book and is not a remake of the original 1987 film.

Speaking to Empire, Edgar described his version of The Running Man as an “intense” and “dangerous” film.

“One of the things about the book that I loved was the fact that Ben Richards is out in the world on his own, so it’s like the deadliest game of hide and seek. It does feel like making a road movie in a lot of ways: a very intense, dangerous road movie,” he said.

The Running Man will be released in cinemas on November 7 2025
