Film enthusiasts are being urged to dash and catch a movie on Netflix that’s been hailed as ‘a fabulous movie in every respect.’

The Outrun chronicles a woman’s path to sobriety following her return to her isolated homeland in the Orkney Islands. The narrative explores how the untamed natural environment and human bonds assist her in facing her history, recovering from a turbulent upbringing, and discovering optimism once more following ten years in London.

The tale draws from Amy Liptrot’s bestselling memoir and has been transformed into a cinema release, which debuted in 2024. Featuring Irish star Saoirse Ronan in the leading role of Rona, the cast also includes Paapa Essiedu, Saskia Reeves, and Stephen Dillane, with filming taking place on location in Orkney, reports the Mirror. 

However, viewers must act swiftly, as it vanishes from Netflix on Thursday 27 November.

The Outrun, which achieves a remarkable 82 percent on the Tomatometer on Rotten Tomatoes, has captivated audiences.

One five-star critique declared: “Brilliant and lovely film, it’s touching and interesting, and cozy and sad and hopeful.”

Another commented: “Simply a fabulous movie, in every respect.

“The Outrun is a stunning, heartfelt journey of self-discovery and redemption set against the breathtaking Orkney landscape. A poignant film about healing, nature, and finding your way back to yourself. A must-watch,” remarked a third viewer.

Another expressed: “Powerful story, very inspiring, a must watch for anyone struggling to make changes in their lives. This story should serve as hope!

“A tough and poetic movie about learning how to enjoy being alive in the edge of addiction and recovery. Ronan makes you walk on her character shoes; feeling excitement and suffering with her. It’s as real as it gets. I found the landscape profoundly moving, both visually and throughout her life analogies,” said a fifth.

In preparation for her portrayal of Rona, Saoirse Ronan mastered agricultural duties including lambing on an Orkney farm – a technique she insisted couldn’t be replicated convincingly on camera.

Her dedication to authenticity was rewarded with a Silver Medallion at the Telluride Film Festival for her outstanding performance.

Ronan also took on producer responsibilities for the project.

Filming took place across the Orkney Islands, with substantial sequences captured on the isolated island of Papa Westray – making it the inaugural feature film to be shot in that location.

Local residents participated in the production as background artists and crew members, bringing vital economic benefits to the community.
