Netflix has given the green light to a second feature film starring beloved British actor Idris Elba reprising his role as John Luther.

The gripping psychological crime drama originally aired on the BBC between 2010 and 2019, chronicling a tormented homicide detective who becomes embroiled with the mysterious killer Alice Morgan (portrayed by Ruth Wilson).

The inaugural feature film, Luther: The Fallen Son, welcomed fresh faces Cynthia Erivo and Andy Serkis, following Luther as he hunted down a wealthy serial murderer operating within London’s upper echelons.

The eagerly awaited sequel is set to see Wilson return in her celebrated role as Luther’s adversary, alongside Dermot Crowley reprising his part as former superior Martin Schenk.

Additionally, Elba will assume a vital position behind the camera, with the new Luther instalment being produced through his 22Summers production company.

Whilst a release date remains unannounced, the forthcoming film will once more follow Luther as he tackles disturbing crimes across the capital.

Netflix’s synopsis for the sequel states: “When a wave of brutal, seemingly random murders hits London, Luther is secretly called back into service.

“But how can he save London when everyone on all sides seems to want him dead?”

Director Payne shared with Tudum: “Neil has yet again created a wonderfully dark tale to bring us all back together.

“It’s a true joy to be back on the streets of Lutherland with the supreme talents that are Idris Elba and Dermot Crowley.

Additional stars confirmed for the forthcoming thriller include Stephen Dillane (The Outrun), Anya Chalotra (The Witcher), Kyle Soller (Andor), Ian Hart (The Mosquito Coast), and Niamh Algar (Raised by Wolves).

Netflix has also hinted that further casting revelations are on the horizon.

The upcoming Luther sequel does not yet have a release date.
