Netflix fans all say same thing ahead of The Thursday Murder Club release | Films | Entertainment
The release date for the Netflix adaptation of Richard Osman’s The Thursday Murder Club has been announced and fans are all saying the same thing.
With a star-studded cast, the murder mystery film will be released on Netflix on Thursday, August 28. The book follows a group of friends in a retirement home who gather to solve murders for fun but find themselves caught in a real case.
Netflix announced the release date of the movie on X on Thursday, April 24 as it tweeted: “The Thursday Murder Club arrives 28 August! Based on Richard Osman’s smash-hit novel, directed by Chris Colombus, and starring Helen Mirren, Pierce Brosnan, Ben Kingsley and Celia Imrie.”
The tweet has garnered 537,100 views, 2,900 likes, dozens of comments and 337 retweets – and there’s a resounding theme. Fans are all saying they can’t wait to watch the new film, which they have huge expectations for.
One said: “I’m eagerly anticipating it.” Another added: “28 August can’t come soon enough!” A third chimed in: “I can’t wait! The way I gasped so loudly.”
A fourth fan commented: “Looking forward to this, I really enjoyed the books.” A fifth remarked: “This August? That’s crazy, I thought it’d be a couple years away. Wow, can’t wait.”
Others shared their thoughts on the cast list. A fan weighed in: “Great books I must admit and what a line up for starters. I guessed at Helen Mirren, but not the other actors. Ben Kinsgley, superb! Can’t wait…”
A second enthused: “Fabulous news and love the casting of the big names!” The film’s synopsis reads: “Based on Richard Osman’s international bestselling novel of the same name, The Thursday Murder Club follows four irrepressible retirees – Elizabeth (Helen Mirren), Ron (Pierce Brosnan), Ibrahim (Ben Kingsley) and Joyce (Celia Imrie) – who spend their time solving cold case murders for fun.
“When an unexplained death occurs on their own doorstep, their casual sleuthing takes a thrilling turn as they find themselves with a real whodunit on their hands. Directed by Chris Columbus, the film is the latest to be produced through the Netflix and Amblin Entertainment partnership.”
Helen Mirren plays ex-spy Elizabeth, Ben Kingsley is ex-psychiatrist Ibrahim, Pierce Brosnan portrays ex–union activist Ron, and Celia Imrie takes on the role of ex-nurse Joyce. Columbus, filmmaker of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, told Netflix: “This is the finest cast I’ve worked with since Potter. They’re just so incredibly well-prepared, and it’s because they do everything. They do theater, they do television, they do film, and they’ve developed those sorts of muscles.”
Osman revealed to Netflix that he found inspiration for The Thursday Murder Club from his mum’s retirement community. He said: “You just sit and chat with these people and they’ve lived these extraordinary lives. You hear these amazing stories and gossip and wisdom.
“You think, ‘these people are so overlooked.’ The idea that these people with their wisdom and their invisibility would be the perfect people to solve [a crime] is exactly where The Thursday Murder Club comes from. Take these people who are underestimated but who have these incredible skills, put them together, and they can achieve anything.”
The Thursday Murder Club will launch exclusively on Netflix on August 28, 2025.
