People are being urged to watch what’s being described as the “most underrated movie,” after viewers admitted it left them in floods of tears.
Film fan Eccy Reviews, who regularly shares recommendations for new movies and TV series on social media, has claimed The Ballad of Wallis Island is a film audiences will return to time and time again.
Available on NOW and Sky Cinema, the 2025 film follows “an eccentric lottery winner who lives alone on a remote island and tries to make his fantasies come true by getting his favourite musicians to perform at his home”.
The movie is directed by James Griffiths and written by Tom Basden and Tim Key. Despite being overlooked by some viewers, it has been nominated for Best British Film at the BAFTA Awards.
Speaking about the film, Eccy Reviews said: “Everybody is finally talking about this film, calling it the most underrated film of last year.
“I told everyone to go and watch it months ago. I was begging people to watch it because it’s the funniest, most emotional and heartwarming film of last year.
“I have never cried so much at a film when I wasn’t even expecting it. The comedy is so on point, and it’s such an enjoyable watch. It’s a film I will definitely revisit time and time again.”
Commenting on his video, one user wrote: “The Ballad of Wallis Island is a 10/10.” Another added: “I’ll watch this at the weekend now it’s on Sky.”
Meanwhile, a third said: “Oooh, weekend film.” On IMDb, one viewer praised the movie, writing: “The second I saw the location settings, I knew this film was going to be great.”
They added: “It’s a simple story with some brilliant performances, especially by Charles and Amanda. They nailed their characters with a unique sense of innocence as people cut off from the rest of the world.
“The soundtrack takes it to another level. If you love films with minimal characters, a remote setting and a great soundtrack, you’ll definitely love this. You might even cry a little if you’re an emotional person – I know I did. A really heartwarming film with a touch of light humour. I definitely recommend it.”
Another reviewer added: “The Ballad of Wallis Island is a quiet gem that blends dry humour with deep emotion. At its heart, it’s a romantic film – not just in the traditional sense, but in its celebration of love, loyalty and human connection.
“The characters’ arcs are believable and rewarding, unfolding with care and subtlety. The film handles grief and pride with nuance and never feels manipulative or forced.
“It’s slow-paced in the best way, giving space to linger, feel and reflect. Poignant, charming and laugh-out-loud funny at times, it’s one of those rare films that stays with you long after the credits roll.
“Highly recommended for anyone who appreciates sincere, character-driven storytelling.”
