Every dog owner loves seeing their pet happy and playful, but even the friendliest dog can get into dangerous situations. Experts say there’s one command that every dog owner should know and use to train their pooch. Teaching this command isn’t just about obedience; it’s about keeping your dog safe.

If you skip it, you could be putting your pet, your family and anyone else around at major risk. A pet expert at Next Level Dog Training shared: “Whether you’re welcoming a new puppy into your home or working with an older dog, learning basic dog commands is essential for their safety, your peace of mind, and a stronger bond.”

What is the command?

According to the expert, the “stay” command is vital for safety and control. They explained: “Particularly in busy environments or around distractions. It allows your dog to remain in place until you release them.

“Always use a release word like ‘okay’ to let your dog know when the stay has ended. This creates clarity and reduces frustration.”

To teach this command, begin by having your dog sit comfortably in front of you. Hold your hand out toward them, palm facing their body, and clearly say “stay” in a calm but firm tone so they understand you expect them to remain in place.

Take a small step backwards, then immediately return to your dog and offer praise or a treat as a reward for staying put. Repeat this several times, gradually increasing both the distance you step away and the length of time your dog holds the position.

The expert advises being patient and consistent, keeping training sessions short and positive, as this will help your dog build confidence and truly understand the command.

Over time, your dog will learn to stay reliably, making this essential skill a crucial part of their safety and your peace of mind. However, there is another command that is “the most important” for safety.

A reliable recall is key. A strong “come” can prevent accidents and let your dog enjoy freedom safely. To teach it, get down to your dog’s level and use an upbeat tone.

Reward them immediately with a treat, toy, or praise when they approach – always use positive reinforcement and never punishment.
