After a 67-year run, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology will no longer publish the MIT Sloan Management Review, officials announced late last month, citing broad changes to communications practices.

MIT Sloan School of Management dean Richard Locke wrote in a letter to faculty that the change follows a realignment of the school’s communications team. As part of that effort, he wrote, “the school has made the difficult decision to cease production of MIT Sloan Management Review, reflecting broader shifts in how audiences engage with management ideas and publications.” He cast the closure of the publication as part of a “streamlined approach to messaging and communications practices.”

But the decision hasn’t gone down well among the business journal’s readers and contributors.

Poets & Quants reported that the decision has prompted backlash from critics who see the mission of the business journal as more critical than ever amid a deluge of artificial intelligence content in the publishing world. Some critics also cited the credibility of the journal among business leaders, arguing that the publication still holds significant influence in those circles.

The last issue of the magazine is expected to publish in September, according to MIT’s website. The website also noted that MIT Sloan will continue to serve its audience “with timely ideas in a variety of formats” via social media, email newsletters and a “new digital content series.”
