Michael Shannon, David Krumholtz Debut New Musical Project at NY Show
Fellow character actor Kevin Corrigan and indie rock vet Jon Wurster also members of Unidentified Aerial Phenomenon, which played first gig Thursday
A new “musical concept” featuring actors Michael Shannon, David Krumholtz, and Kevin Corrigan staged their debut performance Thursday at a New York club.
The band — dubbed Unidentified Aerial Phenomenon, and not the more apropos Character Actors — was rounded out by Jon Wurster, a veteran of bands like Superchunk, the Mountain Goats, and Bob Mould’s.
As Wurster promised in his Instagram post announcing the act — and as evidenced by social media video of the show — Unidentified Aerial Phenomenon brought “improvised #rocknrollweirdness” to New York’s tiny Berlin Under A for their first gig, with Shannon, Corrigan and Wurster providing the beats that Krumholtz freestyle rapped over.
As Stereogum notes, all three actors have embarked on unorthodox musical projects in addition to their prolific acting careers: Shannon occasionally fronts an R.E.M. cover band alongside Wurster collaborator Jason Narducy, recently took part in an all-star Blood in the Tracks 50th anniversary concert, and stars in the musical apocalypse film The End. Krumholtz has released music under the monikers of Hemoglobin and BeenGod StillGod, and Corrigan’s side project NY Grimm opened the Unidentified Aerial Phenomenon’s show.
Given each actor’s busy schedule, It’s unclear if UAP’s gig was a one-off collaboration or the first of a continued collaboration between the artists involved.
