Michael Jackson movie biopic Part 2 release date teased by studio | Films | Entertainment
The Michael Jackson biopic arrives on the big screen this week, but what might surprise some fans is where it ends.
Michael only goes up to the Bad Tour in the late 1980s after a 2 hour runtime and teases that his “Story Continues”, confirming the rumour that this new film is only Part 1 of a possible film trilogy.
The original cut was 3 hours and 30 minutes so there’s plenty of footage left over for the rumoured Part 2.
Covering the 1990s and 2000s would mean a sequel would need to address the 1993 child abuse allegations, which Jackson settled out of court, and 2005 trial for which he was acquitted on all counts.
Meanwhile, producer Graham King reportedly told Lionsgate that Michael Part 2 would focus on Jackson’s albums Dangerous (1991), Invincible (2001), the construction of the Neverland Ranch and “his love of animals”.
As for a release date, Lionsgate CFO Jim Barge mentioned “Michael 2” on three separate occasions during a recent session at the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media & Telecom Conference. The sequel came up during his discussion of the studio’s upcoming theatrical slate. MJVibe, who initially reported the news with an audio clip, assessed that “if Barge’s remarks reflect Lionsgate’s internal planning, Michael 2 would likely arrive sometime during the studio’s fiscal 2028 period, roughly between April 2027 and March 2028.”
Michael hits cinemas on Wednesday.
