Meryl Streep Confirmed to Play Joni Mitchell in Cameron Crowe Biopic
Clive Davis confirmed the Oscar-winning actress’ long-rumored casting during the record exec’s annual pre-Grammys bash Saturday
Clive Davis confirmed the long-rumored casting of Meryl Streep in the Joni Mitchell biopic during the record exec’s pre-Grammy bash Saturday in Los Angeles.
During the annual party held at the Beverly Hilton, Davis was introducing some of the A-listers in attendance and landed on Mitchell, who he said would be portrayed by Streep in Cameron Crowe’s long-in-the-works biopic.
Rumors about Streep’s casting first surfaced in August 2025, with the Oscar-winning actress playing an older version of Mitchell in the film while Anya Taylor-Joy would portray the singer in her younger days; Taylor-Joy’s casting has still not been confirmed.
When reached for comment, Crowe referred Rolling Stone to Davis’ announcement. A rep for Streep and Mitchell did not reply to a request for comment.
Crowe, who developed a long friendship with Mitchell after interviewing the singer for Rolling Stone in 1979, has been developing the Joni biopic for the past half-decade, as he revealed in an October 2025 interview on The Late Show.
“We’ve been working on it for about four years. We have regular meetings where I can ask her anything and she speaks with her heart about all kinds of stuff. It’s a movie that will be not from a distance… This is from her perspective, her life, looking out,” Crowe said.
“She’s kept all of her costumes, all of her clothes, all of her instruments. She’s even still the landlady of her famous house in Laurel Canyon. So this is a really personal, wonderful look at her life and music.”
