‘Masterpiece’ western featuring Clint Eastwood co-star now on Prime | Films | Entertainment

A “masterpiece” western film has been added to Amazon Prime, with movie buffs praising the feature which stars Clint Eastwood‘s memorable co-star. Lee Van Cleef may be best remembered for his turn in two of Eastwood’s biggest western films, For a Few Dollars More and The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly, but starred in a handful of spaghetti westerns himself.

The bloody thrill-ride Day of Anger has since been added to Amazon Prime and has left fans delighted. The Cleef-starring film originally released in 1967 but did not receive a UK release until 1975. You can now watch the “masterpiece” western on Amazon Prime, as well as the lesser-known streaming service, Plex.

One review posted to iMDB called Day of Anger a “masterpiece” from director Tonino Valerii. It reads: “Day of Anger is an incredible western. Not only is it one of the 3 or 4 best non-Leone spaghetti westerns, It also has just about the best non-Ennio Morricone music score I have heard.

“This is one of those movies that I just can’t say enough about. I would recommend it to anyone, and if you like spaghetti westerns you really need to own it.”

Another glowing review of the film heaped praise onto Cleef’s leading role and the story which manages to go “beyond the standard thematic gunslinger opera” of other spaghetti western films.

It reads: “The musical score, cinematography, and strong performances make this particular western a great story that goes beyond the standard thematic gunslinger opera.

“This is an epic western filmed by a camera crew that let’s the scenery interact with the performances. The music is great, and the opening credits have the hook that set the mood and the film delivers it with full fury. Lee Van Cleef gives his best performance on film.

“A many layered character study with humor and depth, the audience is rewarded by great on screen chemistry between Gemma and Cleef. A must see for anyone who is a fan of westerns, or the writing style of Elmore Leonard and Larry McMurtry.”

A third review adds: “It’s well worth tracking down in its uncut 109 minutes version. It’s a shame that quite a few spaghetti westerns were lost amid the truckloads of similar flicks churned out by the Italian studios in the genre’s hayday. This is among the best. And it’s one, even the American horse opera fans, will love.”
