A modern western movie on Netflix has touched viewers with its thought-provoking themes of toxic masculinity and repression. Based on the 1967 novel, 2021’s The Power of the Dog tells the heartbreaking story of two Burbank brothers, Phil and George.

Set against the western backdrop of 1920s Montana, the two cowboys run their family ranch until one of them falls in love and everything starts to change. The 2021 film stars Benedict Cumberbatch as the brutal brother Phil, who begins to torture George’s newfound family in the hopes of destroying their relationship.

He takes a dislike to his brother’s wife and son and uses his rough ways to taunt and unnerve them.

A Rotten Tomatoes review states: “This movie may be hard to watch at times, but it is worth it. Great atmosphere, an incredibly compelling story, amazing acting and characters that are genuinely interesting and multidimensional.

“The Power of the Dog had me emotionally invested and left me shaken. Definitely recommend this movie.”

It became the first film directed by a woman to receive more than 10 Oscar nominations, with a whopping total of 12 at the 94th Academy Awards. Director Jane Chapman ultimately won the Best Director Oscar, and also netted wins at the BAFTA and Golden Globe ceremionies the same year.

Viewers have singled out Sherlock actor Benedict for particular praise. One critic wrote: “Much has already been said about Jane Campion’s western masterpiece, and for good reason. It is indeed truly great. Benedict Cumberbatch gives a career-best performance.”

Another added: “The ultimate slow-burn revenge tale. Packed with powerful performances, The Power of the Dog makes up for its lack of gunfights with building tension and well-earned twists in the story.”

Starring alongside the Doctor Strange actor is Jesse Plemons, who plays his brother George, and Kirsten Dunst, playing Rose, who is plagued by his cruelty and jealousy. One viewer described their performances as “solid”, with another stating it was an “incredible movie with incredible performances”.

A common critique of the film, however, is its lack of action and its sometimes mundane “very slow” pacing. A review states: “Decent story with a slow pace and an unsettling subtext that slowly creeps up on you until it unfolds into something sinister.”

For others, the slower storytelling wasn’t quite worth the wait. They explained: “Very slow movie. You keep waiting for something to happen.

“Interesting ending and story. I’m just not sure if it was worth sitting through.”
