A film described as astonishing and moving, and which left viewers in tears, is now available to watch on Netflix. The Green Mile is a fantasy and crime film that has been labelled a masterpiece by fans who still love it nearly three decades later. The three-hour film, directed by Frank Darabont, is based on Stephen King’s 1996 novel and stars Tom Hanks, David Morse, Bonnie Hunt, and Michael Clarke Duncan.

The film has an excellent score of 94% on Rotten Tomatoes, driven by the high number of positive reviews from impressed fans, who praised everything from the cast to the storytelling.

For those who are not familiar with the film, the synopsis on Rotten Tomatoes reads: “Paul Edgecomb walked the mile with a variety of cons. He had never encountered someone like John Coffey, a massive black man convicted of brutally killing a pair of young sisters. Coffey had the size and strength to kill anyone, but not the demeanour.

“Beyond his simple, naive nature and a deathly fear of the dark, Coffey seemed to possess a prodigious, supernatural gift. Paul began to question whether Coffey was truly guilty of murdering the two girls.”

In a review left on the film website, one fan wrote: “The Green Mile was truly a masterpiece, and I will forever remember this movie as something that truly astonished me.”

Another viewer, branding the film as a “rare five-star” added: “The movie is a masterpiece in storytelling. Wonderful cast- wonderful acting.

“Really interesting scenes all wrapped together in a paranormal aura. I loved it- I loved it when I saw it decades ago- and loved it in 2025. It’s a must-have for any collection. It’s also easily the best King adaptation ever.”

While many categorised the film as a masterpiece, that wasn’t enough to convince fans to watch it.

One wrote: “Top 50 movie of all time. If you’ve never seen it, you need to watch it. You have to watch it. It’s amazing.”

Echoing the must-see nature of the film, another review simply reads: “Watch this movie if you haven’t yet. It will sit with you for months.”

A third said: “It’s a masterpiece and just watch it. Enough said.”

Film fans can watch the emotive movie on Netflix.
