A movie that has been dubbed the ‘greatest war film of all time’ has just landed on Amazon Prime Video in the UK. The streaming service has added a slew of new titles so far in August, including one that has an impressive Rotten Tomatoes score of 94 per cent. On August 7, Amazon Prime Video added Saving Private Ryan to its catalogue for UK viewers. Released back in 1998, the film has stood the test of time and is still considered one of the best war films ever made.

Saving Private Ryan is one of Tom Hanks’ most iconic roles and sees him star alongside Matt Damon, Vin Diesel and a slew of other famous actors in what fans have called a “masterpiece”. The film follows the story of Captain John Miller, who is assigned the task of searching for Private James Ryan during the Normandy invasion of World War 2. It is often regarded as one of Stephen Spielberg’s best films and is still a favourite for many fans of the war film genre today.

Some, such as movie reviewer Mazin Akar, have called it the “greatest war film of all time”. Meanwhile, Rotten Tomatoes reviews have heaped praises on this film.

One called it “the greatest War film”, while another said that they couldn’t find “any flaws” in the film. One reviewer called it “a masterpiece based on WW2”.

“A classic of the genre. Is there anyone who doesn’t know this movie? It’s simply a must-see. Great movie,” said another. One eager reviewer commented: “This is undoubtedly one of the five best WWII movies ever made, the best ensemble cast since The Great Escape.”

Saving Private Ryan is regularly named one of the best war films of all time. According to IMDb, Saving Private Ryan is the fifth-best war movie ever made. It is beaten on that list by Apocalypse Now at number 1, followed by Schindler’s List, The Bridge on the River Kwai and Lawrence of Arabia

Meanwhile, US entertainment publication Vulture also calls it the fifth-best war film ever made, ranking behind 1985’s Ran, 1957’s Paths of Glory, 1998’s The Thin Red Line and 1937’s Grand Illusion.

As well as Saving Private Ryan, Amazon Prime Video has added Ex Machina, Oblivion, Central Intelligence and Snatch to its streaming platform for UK viewers.
