A “masterpiece” series with a 94% score on Rotten Tomatoes is back on Amazon for its final season. The Boys is an American satirical superhero television series developed by Eric Kripke for Amazon Prime.

Based on the comic book series of the same name by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, it follows The Boys, the eponymous team of CIA-sponsored vigilantes, as they seek to bring down The Seven, a superhero team and The Boys‘ most powerful adversaries.

Superpowered individuals (referred to as “Supes”) are recognised as heroes by the general public and work for Vought International, a powerful corporation that markets and monetises them. Outside their heroic personas, most are corrupt, self-serving and recklessly cause collateral damage. The series features an ensemble cast that includes Karl Urban, Jack Quaid, Antony Starr, Erin Moriarty, Jessie T. Usher, Chace Crawford, and Jensen Ackles.

Since its premiere, The Boys has received highly positive reviews from critics, who have praised its cinematography, visuals, soundtrack, performances, and action sequences.

On Rotten Tomatoes, the first four series hold an approval rating of 94%, based on 506 reviews. The website’s critical consensus says it is “bracingly visceral” and home to “violent delights”, while being “wickedly smart” and unafraid to throw “socially critical punches”.

Many critics and publications have called it among the best Amazon Prime series ever. Starr’s portrayal of Homelander has also received much critical acclaim, with multiple critics calling it one of the best performances on television

Outstanding Drama Series in 2021, and has won seven Critics’ Choice Super Awards and six Astra TV Awards.

NME called the show a “bloody masterpiece” and Slashfilm said that The Boys goes out exactly how it arrived: as “the best, most incisive, and radical superhero show on TV”.

The first two episodes of the fifth and final series of The Boys were released yesterday (April 8). The next six episodes will air weekly on Amazon Prime until the finale on May 20.
