‘Masterpiece’ period drama with 88% score streaming now on Netflix | Films | Entertainment

An “outstanding” period drama starring Carey Mulligan is hailed by fans for its “superb” performances. The Dig (2021) is based on John Preston’s historical novel of the same name and reimagines events surrounding the real-life 1939 excavation of Sutton Hoo in Suffolk, where a treasure trove of Anglo-Saxon artefacts was discovered.

Mulligan plays Edith Pretty a wealthy widow and landowner who hires amateur archeologist Basil Brown (Ralph Fiennes) towards curious mounds on her land. Pretty and Brown’s central role in the remarkable discovery are true to life, though considerable creative liberties were taken to enhance the drama of the dig.

One person took to IMDb to say while the film is a “slow burner” it’s a “masterpiece” with a “magnificent” cast.

Another wrote: “There is a lot I can say about this film, but I’ll keep it short. If you love simple stories being told in a beautiful and clear manner, and if you like Archaeology, then this is the film for you. All of the actors have done a wonderful job.

A fan who provided an Audience Review on Rotten Tomatoes called it a “very nice telling of a true story about Edith Pretty and the historical find at Sutton-Hoo”.

“Recommend you spent some time in Wikipedia and research before watching, but its well acted and filmed.”

Another added: “The movie paces beautifully, maintaining interest, whilst generating a sense of calm representative of the setting.

“The cinematography is gorgeous, with beautiful lighting and compositional choices, and there are several standout shots that stay with you. A wonderful movie.”

Some criticised the narrative as “dull” though many were taken with its patient approach, and revelling in the beauty of the English countryside.

A third said: “The story wouldn’t be half as impactful without the outstanding performances of the film’s accomplished cast. The Dig might tell a forgettable tale but it’s certainly an enjoyable period drama.”

A fourth added: “Outstanding period piece. Superb performances from Mulligan and Fiennes.”

The film is Certified Fresh on the site with an 88% score on its Tomatometer, reflecting the percentage of approved critics who have given it a positive review.
