A hidden gem war film on Netflix is being hailed as an ‘outstanding masterpiece’ standing shoulder to shoulder with the likes of Black Hawk Down and Saving Private Ryan.

Many viewers have proclaimed it the ‘best war film of all time’ and heaped praise upon the performances delivered by the accomplished cast.

The Siege of Jadotville stars Jamie Dornan in the lead role of Patrick Quinlan, supported by Mark Strong, Mikael Persbrandt, Jason O’Mara, Danny Sapani, Michael McElhatton and Guillaume Canet, forming an impressive ensemble.

The 2016 war drama features a screenplay written by Kevin Brodbin and is helmed by director Richie Smyth, with the Irish-South African production drawing from Declan Power’s book, The Siege at Jadotville: The Irish Army’s Forgotten Battle (2005).

The film chronicles the actual events of the Siege of Jadotville from September 1961 and examines an Irish Army unit’s involvement in this historically significant episode during the United Nations Operation in the Congo. The siege formed part of the broader Congo Crisis (1960-1965), reports the Irish Mirror.

The Siege of Jadotville secured three Irish Film and Television Awards, including the coveted Best Director accolade.

The film’s official synopsis reads: “An Irish commander and his battalion of 150 men withstand a siege by 3,000 Congolese troops led by French and Belgian mercenaries working for mining corporations.”

The war drama has garnered widespread acclaim from both critics and audiences, with one reviewer writing: “The Siege of Jadotville is a fitting tribute to the extraordinary courage and heroism shown by the 35th Battalion ‘A’ Company, and for that and many reasons beside, the movie deserves a salute.”

Another critic said: “The Siege of Jadotville is a well-crafted piece of filmmaking that investigates the often-contentious relationship between politics and war.”

While a third reviewer added: “By highlighting the bravery of young soldiers at the mercy of external forces, The Siege of Jadotville acts as a powerful tribute.”

Audiences have been left thoroughly impressed, with one viewer calling it “one of the best war movies of all time”, while another enthusiast described it as an “excellent masterpiece” that’s a “must-recommended movie for watching”.

One IMDB user review says: “This is a good movie. Reminiscent in action scenes of the opening of Saving Private Ryan – such is the feeling of realism, but with less emphasis on gore.”

While another review reads: “Perfection! I was skeptical of this movie at first, but within minutes I was swept away in the intensely powerful scenes, swayed by the beautiful music. This was by far one of the most riveting and emotionally captivating movies I have seen in a while.

“At every turn the viewer is held on the edge of their seat, whether in the dead silence before, or during one of many fierce battle scenes. This movie is both gripping and thrilling and is at the top of my ‘To re-watch’ list. If you haven’t already, bookmark and watch the movie!”.

One fan said about the film: “Outstanding! This film was truly outstanding and one of the best war movies ever made. All of the acting was perfection. Way past time for someone to tell this true story of this siege. It is not to be missed. Had me from the start and never let me go. I will watch and rewatch!”.

While another impressed viewer wrote: “What a revelation! I have seen many movies but none have come as such an unexpected surprise as this film. This film is a must watch for any war movie fan. The war scenes in this film are compelling and draw a much deserved comparison with Zulu.

“The scale and cinematography of the siege are amazing. As is the degree of tension that the viewer is swept up in. The acting throughout is solid and convincing, especially Mark Strong. Miss this film at your peril. One of the best movies I have ever seen.”

One IMDB review says: “Simply outstanding. An unknown story brought to light in absolutely the best way possible. This film had me hooked within the first minute, and I’m sure it’ll be one I’ll watch again and again for a long time. This movie is definitely a must-watch. I am sure it will one day go down as a major classic.”
