‘Masterpiece’ Netflix film that has fans ‘mesmerised from start to end | Films | Entertainment
Netflix viewers will be pleased to learn that the streaming platform is home to a critically acclaimed movie that has fans “mesmerised”.
Marriage Story is a 2019 drama film written and directed by Noah Baumbach, who also produced the film with David Heyman. It stars Scarlett Johansson and Adam Driver, who play a couple going through a bi-coastal divorce, which is complicated by custody issues regarding their son. Laura Dern, Alan Alda, Ray Liotta, Julie Hagerty, and Merritt Wever also appear in supporting roles.
The film’s synopsis reads: “A stage director and his actor wife struggle through a gruelling, coast-to-coast divorce that pushes them to their personal and creative extremes.”
The film received critical acclaim upon release, particularly for Baumbach’s direction and screenplay, and the performances of Johansson, Driver, and Dern. I picked up numerous accolades, including six nominations at the 92nd Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Actor (Driver), Best Actress (Johansson), Best Original Screenplay, and Best Original Score. For her performance, Dern won the Academy Award, Golden Globe, Screen Actors Guild Award, BAFTA Award and Critics’ Choice Movie Award, all in the Best Supporting Actress category.
Marriage Story has amassed a near-perfect 95% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with the critics’ consensus stating: “Observing a splintering union with compassion and expansive grace, the powerfully acted Marriage Story ranks among writer-director Noah Baumbach’s best works.”
One viewer said: “Marriage Story is a masterpiece; phenomenally acted, fantastic screenplay, beautifully shot and edited, and extremely emotional. Amazing.”
Another added: “Adam Driver is absolutely mesmerising with such a brutally sad performance. If he weren’t going up against Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker, then he would have the Best Actor Oscar in his cabinet. Scarlett Johansen is also brilliant, together they unite to make such a heartbreaking but sad truth of love.”
“This movie is perfect from start to finish, it reflects us and highlights that most of the movies about him get the perfect stuff, the ones I’ve seen. He hurt the repulsion, the show, the tension of a partner who betrayed you, hurt you the same, perfectly and much more. The uncontrollable anger of the characters is clearly and Scarlett and Adam, who deliver a work with a quality that you rarely see,” said a third.
Marriage Story is available to stream now on Netflix.
