A “masterpiece” film that’s regularly named among the greatest ever is streaming now in the UK. Titanic (1997) is a historical romance based on accounts of the real-life sinking of the British luxury liner, which sank in 1912 during its maiden voyage, in a tragedy that claimed the lives of some 1,500 people.

Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet star as Jack and Rose, two passengers divided by class who fall for each other in the lead up to the disaster. The ensemble cast also includes Kathy Bates, Bill Paxton, Billy Zane, Bernard Hill, Frances Fisher, Danny Nucci, Jonathan Hyde, and David Warner. The film, which incorporates real and fictional elements, was written and directed by iconic American filmmaker James Cameron, known for blockbuster franchises including Alien, Terminator and the Avatar movies.

Titanic was a box office smash, and remained the highest grossing film ever for a decade until Avatar (2009), also directed by Cameron. It currently ranks fourth in the all-time lifetime grosses.

It was also critically acclaimed and won a staggering 11 Oscars, including Best Director and Best Picture.

Fans have flocked to IMDb to lavish praise upon the 90s classic. One called it the “greatest film of all time”, that’s “full of spectacle likely not to be seen in a motion picture again”.

“The sheer magnificence of this film is on an epic scale, the replica ship is so detailed it makes it look real. Kate Winslet is a great lead with some solid supporting performances, especially Frances Fisher as Rose’s mother, Ruth, and Gloria Stuart as Old Rose.

They added that while it “might be over long and a little corny”, Cameron “provided the late 90s with a masterpiece and changed the big budget blockbuster forever”.

Another called it: “One of the most important films in Cinema history so definitely a must watch and 10/10.”

A third wrote that the director “created a once-in-a-lifetime experience with Titanic and, while capturing the realism of the event, created one of the greatest romances of this era”.

A fourth called it “absolutely stunning” and a “must see!” “It’s a classic and the best love story in film history. Leo and Kate have the perfect chemistry and the soundtrack is beautiful.

“I think it’s captured what really happened in history incredibly well and you really felt that you were with them in the ship. The videography is very skilled and the storyline is very different to other love stories.

“If you want a romantic, historical, thrilling period drama film then this is it. Don’t be put off that it is 3 hours because it isn’t slow at all.”

The film has a 12 certificate and contains strong language, nudity, intense threat and disturbing images – so viewer discretion is advised.

Titanic is streaming on Amazon Prime in the UK again as of Monday, January 26, according to Just Watch. It’s also available to stream on Disney+.
