‘Masterpiece’ hailed as ‘one of the greatest horror films ever’ added to Amazon Prime | Films | Entertainment
A “masterpiece” horror film hailed as “one of the best ever” is streaming now on Amazon Prime Video. 28 Days Later (2002) tells the story of Jim (Cillian Murphy) who awakens from a coma to find London abandoned, as a mysterious “Rage” virus that turns people into violent beasts sweeps the land. Whilst on the run, Jim meets a group of fellow survivors, and learns the full extent of the catastrophe that’s unfolding as they seek a place of safety.
The film also features supporting roles from various well-known British and Irish stars, including Naomie Harris, Christopher Eccleston and Brendan Gleeson. It was directed by iconic British filmmaker Danny Boyle, (Trainspotting, Yesterday (2019) and written by Alex Garland.
The post-apocalyptic thriller spawned a number of sequels, directed by Boyle or other directors, the most recent of which was 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple (2026), directed by Nia DaCosta.
Fans have flocked to IMDb to praise the first film of the franchise, with one writing: “Honestly one of the best horror movies I have ever seen. Acting, Soundtrack, and Camera workcreate one of the most dire environments in any movie. Boyle and Garland made a masterpiece imo.”
Another wrote: “This is one of the best horror films I’ve ever seen, let alone one of the best, if I must, “zombie” movies I’ve ever seen.
“What makes this movie different from the other zombie movies out there? Well, there’s a sense of humanism in here, which you would rarely find in horror movies. The movie has such great characters to care and cheer for. I just love it.”
A third added: “The make up and effects for the infected were fantastic and it made them look absolutely terrifying up close. The music was also good adding suspense and it seemed to sync well with the tone of the movie.
“Overall 28 Days Later is an effective horror thriller that was much better than I thought it would be. If you’re a fan of these kinds of films than chances are you’ll enjoy this one too.”
Meanwhile, a fourth said: “A delightful film. Truly great. I myself have known about this classic post-apocalyptic film for years, yet I always put it off. I seemingly had this wrong idea about it.
“Quite frankly, it was not what I expected at all, in the best way possible. I don’t want to spoil in case others had the same misconceptions as me, because I was delightfully surprised in the direction the movie went.”
It has a 15 certificate and contains very strong language, strong violence, bloody images, horror, and sexual threat – so viewer discretion is advised.
28 Days Later was added to Amazon Prime in the UK on Sunday March 29.
