‘Masterpiece’ gangster film ‘as good as’ The Godfather now streaming | Films | Entertainment
A gangster film hailed as a “masterpiece” has been put on a level with The Godfather by movie fans. The Marlon Brando-featuring film is often considered to be in a league of its own, especially in the crime genre, but one other film has caught the eye of audiences who believe Johnny Depp made a movie as good as the Hollywood feature.
The Godfather even has some overlap with the film in question, with both features banking on Al Pacino‘s star power and strong leading role. Released two decades after the Oscar-winning film, Pacino joined the likes of Depp, Michael Madsen, and Anne Heche in a gutsy role similar to his turn as Michael Corleone.
The 1997 crime thriller Donnie Brasco depicts the true story of FBI agent Joe Pistone’s role in infiltrating the Bonnano crime family. The film received an Academy Award nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay, but lost out to L.A. Confidential.
One fan of the film wrote: “Donnie Brasco is a masterpiece, brilliantly capturing what it means to live as an undercover agent within the mafia. It shows not only the constant tension and danger but also the unexpected bonds that can form with the very people you’re meant to watch and eventually bring down.
“The relationship at the heart of the film feels both genuine and heartbreaking, turning the story into a kind of fairy tale without a happy ending – everything unfolds as you know it must, but not as you wish it would. It’s a powerful, tragic, and unforgettable look at loyalty, identity, and betrayal.”
Others were full of praise for Pacino, with one review hailing him as a “cinematic force” to be reckoned with. The review reads:”Al Pacino is more than just an actor – he’s a cinematic force. From The Godfather to Scarface and Heat, he has delivered some of the most iconic and emotionally intense performances in film history.
“His ability to disappear into complex characters, bringing them to life with nuance and power, is unmatched. Whether he’s playing a ruthless gangster, a weary detective, or a tortured soul, Pacino’s presence commands attention.
“His voice, expressions, and sheer intensity can carry an entire scene. Few actors can balance rage and vulnerability as effortlessly as he does. Watching him is like attending a masterclass in acting. A true legend of the screen whose influence will never fade.”
A third viewer agreed and suggested Pacino is “as good as” he was in The Godfather II. The fan wrote: “The way he talks, walks, acts, laughs and moves with the other actors is simply astounding. He really makes you feel for him, which he hadn’t been able to do since his classic performance in The Godfather Pt. II.”
